Finding Better Forever Homes Together: Kzoo Cat Cafe Joins Pet Protect & Connect

We’re really excited to share that Kzoo Cat Cafe in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has officially joined Pet Protect & Connect as one of our early adopter rescues.

From the beginning, our goal at Pet Protect & Connect has been to help rescues make stronger adoption matches without adding more stress, admin work, or complicated systems to teams that are already stretched thin.

After speaking with Kzoo Cat Cafe’s founder Abbey and learning more about how Kzoo approaches adoptions, it immediately felt aligned with what we’re building.

If you’ve never seen what they’re doing in Kalamazoo, their cafe is genuinely special. It’s cage-free, welcoming, and centered around helping people connect with cats in a real environment instead of just scrolling through photos online.

During the conversation, Abbey shared: “A lot of times people will just see pictures on the internet and that’s one thing, but if you have other cats or kids or dogs… even giving people that baseline of ‘okay, I want to meet these cats when I go there’ — that’ll be really cool.”

Pet Protect & Connect was never meant to replace the human side of rescue or adoption. It’s there to support it — helping people discover cats they may not have initially considered while helping rescues spend less time sorting through poor-fit inquiries and more time making thoughtful placements.

Abbey also talked about how visitors often come into the cafe saying things like: “I want an orange cat.” But then they sit down and a completely different cat chooses them. That’s the kind of connection we want to support. The tool helps narrow possibilities, but the real relationship still happens in person — on a lap, on a couch, during a visit at the cafe.

We’re currently building out Kzoo Cat Cafe’s dashboard with their adoptable cats, including bonded pairs like Eric & Frankie and Bullseye & Lydia, because keeping those relationships visible matters too.

One feature we’re especially excited about is bringing the experience directly into the cafe itself through QR codes near the cats. Visitors will be able to scan, fill out a profile right from their phones, and get compatibility-based recommendations while they’re meeting cats in real time.

That blend of technology and real-life interaction feels important to us. Rescue work is already deeply human, and any tool we build should support that experience, not get in the way of it.

Another thing we appreciated during this conversation was how collaborative the Kzoo team immediately was. Abbey talked about having staff test the platform, click around, and get familiar with it so they can confidently help visitors use it inside the cafe.

Right now, feedback from rescue teams is incredibly valuable because we’re still shaping this platform alongside the people actually doing the work every day. That’s also why we’re intentionally keeping this early adopter group very small. We’d rather build this carefully with a handful of rescues who genuinely care about outcomes than rush something out before it’s ready.

Kzoo's onboarding came at a personally meaningful time for our founder. Liz originally prepared Kzoo’s demo before an unexpected medical leave and open heart surgery earlier this year. Returning to work part-time and finally getting to walk Abbey through the platform felt emotional in the best way — like reconnecting with the mission again.

We’re incredibly grateful to Abbey and the entire Kzoo Cat Cafe team for being willing to jump in early, test ideas, share feedback, and help shape what Pet Protect & Connect becomes.

More updates soon. And probably more cat stories too. 💜
